TRAM Flap
The TRAM ( Transverse Rectus Abdominus Myocutaneous) Flap is one of today's most popular methods of breast reconstruction. In this procedure we transfer skin, fatty tissue, and muscle from the abdomen to the mastectomy site to recreate the breast mound. Using your own tissue gives the breast a more natural feel and movement. A side benefit for most patients is a tighter tummy. This procedure can be done at the same time as the mastectomy or later as a delayed reconstruction.
Drawbacks of the surgery are limitation of heavy lifting for 3 months, loss of one of the "sit up" muscles of the abdomen, and scars. Not all patients are candidates for this type of surgery and it is important to consult with your plastic surgeon regarding all the benefits, risks and alternatives of the TRAM Flap. Please check out the related ASPS web site for a detailed discription of the surgery.
