Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition of overdeveloped breast tissue in males.  It can be due to hormonal changes, heredity, or the use of certain drugs.  Adolescent males may through a period of temporary gynecomastia, but if it becomes a permanent problem, it should be evaluated by a pediatrician to check for abnormal hormone levels.

Removal of the excess breast tissue can be accomplished by liposuction or by surgical or by surgical excision.  Liposuction is done if the gynecomastia is due to primarily fatty tissue.  Surgical excision is performed if the underlying tissue is more glandular breast tissue.  Proper surgical evaluation will determine which approach is the most appropriate.

Any procedure for gynecomastia is usually considered cosmetic; however, on some occasions, insurance has provided coverage.  We can assist you with petitioning the insurance company if it is determined that it is a medically necessary procedure.
