Breast Reduction
Large breasts (hypermastia) can cause a number of physical and psychological problems. The weight of the breasts suspended on narrow bra straps can lead to neck pain, back pain, grooves in the shoulders, headaches and restriction of movement. Because large breasts often droop, skin on skin contact at the lower portion of the breast can lead to rashes and skin ulceration. Many patients with hypermastia are self-conscious and limit their clothing to loose and baggy styles. Breast reduction surgery can improve all of the above. This procedure is often covered by insurance but some criteria need to be met. Patients should have tried some non-surgical methods such as physical therapy, chiropractic care, exercise or weight loss prior to applying for the procedure. It is usually necessary to prior authorize the procedure with your insurance company. We will complete this application for you.
The procedure is done as an outpatient and usually takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. General anesthesia is used and following surgery you are in the recovery area for several hours before going home. You are allowed to begin light activity, including showering, the following day. Most patients return to work in 2 to 3 weeks. Please visit the ASPS web link to breast reduction for more details.
